Fi, e.g. 1 Dial. 6.67 lines 57-9. According to him, An
is the work of six copyists, the third taking over at 1 Dial.
6.67, and the last three are less accurate than the first.

Observations: In three legible hands. One
scribe wrote fols. 17r to 69v (col. a, line 10), another
took over briefly to 73r (col. a, line 9), the first scribe then
resumed to 75v (col. b, line 8), and a third scribe finished the
Dialogus and wrote the Abbreviatio, which
is bound at the front of the volume. 1 Dial. ends and 2
Dial. begins on the same page (238r), 2 Dial. ends and 3.2 Dial.
begins on the same page (257r), so the three parts always made
one MS. The tabula (ending with a blank folio) is a
gathering of 16 folios, the rest of the MS is in gatherings
of 12 folios counting from 17r. First page of Dialogus
is decorated; see 17r.

Ar
ends part way through 3.2 Dial. 3.17, at "hoc multis
rationibus improbatur primo" (= Ly fol. 271v a53 =ABMA
vol.
33, p.299 line 97). It
ends in the middle of the first column of the page, which
suggests that its exemplar had run out, or that the project
was abandoned -- probably not abandoned, since the writer went
on to copy the Abbreviatio. See End
of 3.2 Dial.
According to Ian Murdoch, Critical Edition of Pierre
D'Ailly's Abbreviatio Dyalogi Okan (Thesis, Monash
University, 1981), p. xlvi, the watermarks suggest that Ar
was written 'probably not before about 1430 and possibly
not for thirty years or so later'.

Ballweg's information that the watermark on some pages of Ar
is the same as that on some pages of Pz implies
that Ar could be contemporary with (or even later

Observations: Ballweg has drawn attention to the changes of handwriting in this manuscript. It seems to consist of gatherings of 16-24 folios, each written by a different hand. This would seem to indicate that the MS was produced quickly by taking its exemplar to pieces for simultaneous copying (cf. We). See fols. 2r, 22r, 40r, 64r, 88r, 108r, 126r, 146r, 166r, 184r, 200r, 220r, 245r, 265r, 285r, 303r, 323r, 345r, 365v.
What was apparently originally the last
gathering ended (fol. 365v) at 'antistitem', the point at
which a number of other MSS also end -- see see
End
of 3.2 Dial. Just before the end two passages were
omitted. The first of these omitted passages is not supplied.
However, some time later the passage on 365v
following the point at which the second passage had
been omitted was crossed out and text equivalent to ABMA
vol.
33, p.290 line 52 - p.323
line 37 was copied in a new hand, continuing into what
is now the last gathering (which begins on 366r).
The text after "antistitem" was added, up to the point at
which Ly ends.
Before this change of handwriting, the
chapter numbering in Di was one ahead of Ly,
i.e. the chapter including the material deleted was ch. 17,
whereas in Ly it is ch. 16. After the new hand takes
over, the chapter numbering is the same as in Ly, and
each chapter has a content summary (e.g. compare 367v with Ly
271r a) identical with the summaries found in Ly and
(as far as we know) in no earlier witness. The last sentence 'Et
hec de tertia parte dialogorum pro nunc tibi sufficiant',
is found otherwise only in Ly (not in Pz).
These facts suggest that what is now the last gathering of Di was copied from Ly (published 1494). Since the last gathering is integral to the MS as at present bound, the MS must have been bound after the publication of Ly, though presumably the bulk of the volume had been copied some (undetermined) time earlier. Only the binding establishes any relationship between this MS and the Cistercian order and there is otherwise no indication of ownership. Since it was in their possession, it may well have been copied by or for a member of the Cistercian Order, but we cannot be sure.

that in 1 Dial. and 3.2 Dial. this MS is close to the family that includes Ba. Di is
especially close to Ba.

Observations: Contains emendations throughout, some in the margins, some between lines, some written into gaps in the text or over erasures, also notes ('Nota...') and other comments. These emendations were apparently not made by the original scribe. Some decoration of initial capitals, sometimes with vertical lines and two circles making a strange face. For examples see fols. 32r, 32v, 34v, 41v (images posted with kind permission of Biblioteca Agustinos, Real Monasterio del Escorial, Madrid, Spain). On the page 1 Dial. ends 2 Dial. begins (175r), on the page 2 Dial. ends 3.2 Dial. begins (192v), so the three parts always made one MS.
Some material is out of place. On fol.33ra in 1 Dial. 5.2 (= ABMA vol. 35 p. 205 line 84) the passage 1 Dial. 5.3.115-5.3.226 (= ABMA vol. 35 pp.214-218) is inserted, running to fol.33vb. It should have begun on fol.35rb. Marginal notes draw attention to the displacement.
See End of 3.2 Dial. A comment at the end of the main text (232r) after the word 'antistitem' ('hic est finis istius doctoris quia non reperitur plus parisius deo laus et virgini intemerate') suggests either that Es was copied at least partly in Paris (other evidence suggests it was copied in Toulouse) or that the copyist had made inquiries in Paris or, more likely, that Es had a Parisian exemplar. If 'doctoris' is an error for 'dialogi' the comment may have come from the exemplar or another ancestor.
Collation of 1 Dial. 1-5 shows that in 1 Dial. Es belongs to the B family.
Knysh: A note preceding fol. 1r states that the manuscript was copied in Toulouse. The script appears to be of the early 15th century. The manuscript has marginal corrections and additions throughout.

is likely that 1 Dial. and 2 Dial. were written separately and
later bound into one volume. We do not know when the note
referring to Ludovico de Nerli was written. If the information
is correct, the copy of 1 Dial. must have been made,
probably in Paris, before 1372. If Bandini's identification of
the scribe of 2 Dial. is correct, the copy of 2 Dial. must
have been written in the late 14th or early 15th century (Tedaldus
gave his books to S. Croce in 1406, and seems to have died a
few years later). In 1 Dial. initial capitals of chapters are
decorated.

Observations: In gatherings of 12 folios. Text written in the same hand throughout. Marginalia in a number of different hands. There are some corrections or additions to the text, some of which seem to be in the hand that wrote the text.
Fr includes a 'prologue' otherwise found only in We. It is written in Fr on the second column of the back of a folio (12v) preceded by several blank folios, facing the first page of the text. That is, it was written onto the back of the first gathering (containing a list of chapters), which may have been made after the text (otherwise it would not have had so much blank space).
In 3.2 Dial. 3.15 and 16 two passages
are omitted. The first is not supplied. After 'antistitem'

with the second omitted passage. At the end of this passage,
after a small indent, the text continues (389va
line 26) with the rest of the sentence that should follow 'antistitem'
and goes on to the end of the text as found in MzPzLy.
Thus the text of chapter 16 is out of order, with only some
white space to warn the reader. The text continues to the end
of MzPzLy, but (unlike Di) without the chapter summaries found
in Ly and without the last sentence found in Di
and Ly. It appears that the text originally ended at 'antistitem'
(or rather, since Fr continues with Octo
questiones, the exemplar from which Fr
got 3.2 Dial. originally ended at 'antistitem') and
that more material has been added, possibly from Mz or
Pz or some kindred MS.
Collation of 1 Dial. 1-5 shows that Fr is often part of the family that includes Ca --- see here; but often it seems akin to the family that includes Ba --- see here (a passage several lines long). In some places the text seems to have been revised rather freely, if not by the scribe then by someone whose version the scribe follows. See 1 Dial. 4.30, passages in pink. Sometimes the readings of Fr make no sense. (These characteristics may all have been inherited from its lost exemplar, which the scribe of Fr may have copied faithfully.)
In 3.1 Dial. Fr seems fairly close to Mz.
In 3.2 Dial. several significant variants indicate closeness to Mw (Scott) --- see here.

Observations: According to the dedicatory
letter by Iodocus Badius Ascensius that serves as preface, the
printer (Treschel) had the work 'faithfully corrected by
diligent and clever men of Paris University'. The basis of the
editor's work was the previous printed edition, Pz.
Collation is consistent with the hypothesis that Ly is
a reworking of Pz (see 'Pz,
Lm
and Ly'), with intelligent (though sometimes mistaken) but
often conjectural, emendations and additions. For 3.1 Dial.,
with a very thin MS tradition, the editor of Ly does
not seem to have found any MS to consult. However, in 1 Dial.
there are variants
that suggest that he may have consulted some MS akin to Fr.
For 3.2 Dial. he may also have been able to consult a MS.
Ly includes a number of helps
to the reader: every chapter is headed by a summary, there is
a table of questions discussed, there is an excellent �Tabula
alphabetica� (index); this material seems independent of
similar material found in some other witnesses and of
d�Ailly�s Abbreviatio.
There is a transcription
of the chapter summaries on the project website. We have
not transcribed the �Tabula alphabetica�.
Knysh: Philippe Renouard, Bibliographie des impressions et des oeuvres de Josse Badius Ascensius, t. II, Paris 1908, pp. 55, 493, cites two letters of 1497 by Ascensius which identify Brother Augustine of Regensburg OESA as the scholar responsible for preparing Trechsel's 1494 Lyons edition of Ockham's Dialogus. It would thus appear that Br. Augustine was the author of the additions at 3.1 Dial. 2.11-12 (ABMA vol. 20 pp.356-7) and 3.2 Dial. 1.6 (ABMA vol. 33 p.34) found only in this edition. Br. Augustine was a 'baccalarius formatus' of the University of Paris. It is unclear whether he had anything to do with the earlier edition of the Dialogus (Pz) printed in that city.

According to note on fol. 2r, it was given to St John's College by John Fisher, bishop of Rochester (d. 1535).
Observations: There are summaries at the head of each chapter (see 10r), as in Av, and there is a list of these at the beginning of the MS (see 1r). (Perhaps the chapter list was the source of the chapter headings.) The summaries show no particular resemblance to d'Ailly's Abbreviatio or to the chapter summaries of Ly. There are some lengthy marginal annotations, some of which supply omissions, some give additional references or quotations from authorities, and some are criticisms of the argument (e.g. 17r, 31v, 32r, 34v, 35r, 37r, 42r, 45v, 54v); cropping of the edges of pages makes some of these difficult to follow. Ox also includes the alphabetic tabula found also in Av, Vf and Vc, begining at 293v, possibly in different writing.
Collation shows that Ox belongs to the family that includes AvVfVc. It is especially close to Av. However, there are passages not found in Ox but found in Av and vice versa, which seems to rule out the possibility that either was copied, directly or indirectly, from the other.

Knysh: The original volume was given by Plumetot to the
library of St Victor at Paris sometime between 1428 and 1436,
since Simon is described as 'domini nostri Regis in sua
camera pallamenti consiliarius' (fol. 169r), a title
which, according to Ouy, Plumetot received in 1428 from Henry VI
of England, whose occupation of Paris ended in 1436. The note on
fol. 121v is in a different, and later, script. It is not by
Claude de Grandrue (who composed the 'Que secuntur hic
habentur' note on fol. 199v of Mw), and is
therefore prior to 1502. It is posterior to the annotations in
St. Victor volumes left by scribes working under prior (then
abbot) Jean Lamasse, who died in 1458. The same scribe who
penned the notice on fo. 121v also added the list of Wycliffe's
'errors' on fol. 167-168. His mention of 3.1 Dial. and Compendium
errorum strongly suggests that Mz was available
at St. Victor by his time. This anonymous scribe (who, unlike
Grandrue, attributed the Defensor Pacis to Ockham)
correctly believed that 3.1 Dial. and Compendium
Errorum were distinct works. Grandrue on the other hand
(in his Catalogus Typographicus of 1514, preserved in
Ms. Lat. 14767 of the Biblioth�que Nationale in Paris)
considered Compendium Errorum to be a part of the
otherwise lost segments of 3 Dialogus ['Item...
tocius tercie partis desunt septem alii tractatus... de horum

Ballweg argues that in 2 Dial. Va sometimes seems like a copy of Vb. However in 1 Dial. Va seems to be copied from an exemplar corrected from an A or B family MS. For the two parts Va must have used different exemplars.

He notes a change of handwriting at 50v51r, i.e. at the end of 1 Dial. 1-5. He quotes a note on fol. 191r: 'Istum librum commodavi magistro Bernardo Boerii Ordinis Carmelitarum in mense Iunii anno Domini MCCCCXIII et eundum mihi reddidit die 26 Ianuarii anno Domini MCCCCXIIII'. He quotes another note on fol. 47r in the bottom margin (see MS online), which draws the reader's attention to some disorganisation of the text. In Ezkorn's transcription reads: 'Nota lector hic magnum scriptoris defectum. Nam ab ista clausula in ista linea ultima scripta, scilicet 'qualis numquam fuit ab initio' totum vacat et superfluit usque infra fol. 3 columna 2, linea 14, ubi habetur 'mundi usque modo' et totum residuum iterum habetur infra libro sequenti sexto et transposite valde. Et quia credo ibi bene esse de hoc non curo, vel si vis aliter: emenda 'vacat' ab isto capitulo ab ista clausula, videlicet 'ordinarius' quod est capitulum 33 usque ad medium capituli et ultra, scilicet 41, quia totum illud habetur magis ordinate libro sexto plenarie. Ideo non computetur inter capitula, scilicet 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, et sic totus iste tractatus non habebit nisi 35 capitula quoniam alia superfluunt.'
Translation: 'Reader, notice a great defect on the part of the writer. From from the clausula in the last line written [i.e. last line of fol. 47 ra = 1 Dial. 5.34, ABMA vol. 35 p.312 line 7], viz. 'qualis numquam fuit ab initio', the whole is empty and superfluous to 3 folios below, col. 2 line 14 [fol. 49vb], at 'mundi usque modo' [= the continuation of ABMA vol. 35 p.312 line 7], and the whole of the rest is found again below in the following book 6; and transpose well. And because I believe it is well there [i.e. it is all correct below in book 6] I don't care about this, but if you wish otherwise: emend 'vacat' [i.e. delete] from this chapter from the clausula 'ordinarius' [last line of 47 ra], which is cap. 33 [in the numbering of the MS] to the middle of the chapter and beyond, viz. 41 [in the numbering of the MS = ABMA vol. 41 p.42 line 98], because this whole is had better ordered in full in book 6. Therefore the intervening chapters are not counted, viz. 34-41 [in the numbering of the MS], and thus the whole of this tract has only 35 chapters [in our numbering 36, because we recognise a new chapter 17/18], since the others are superfluous.'

Fol. 47rb (see MS
online) is marked 'va - cat' ("it is empty") with a
vertical line, and at the bottom of 47rb is a note: "usque
ad xi columpnam ad signum +", indicating that the deletion
continues to sign "+" eleven columns later. The intervening
columns have no deletion marks, but 49vb lines 1-14 are marked 'va
- cat' with a vertical line, with sign '+' at line 14. In
other words, all the material intruded into the line "qualis
nunquam fuit ab initio / mundi usque modo" (1 Dial. 5.34, ABMA
vol.
35 p.312 line 7-8) is to be deleted. These
emendations, and also the above note transcribed by Etzkorn,
seem not to be by the copyist but by a reader. When the note was
written the codex included at least 1 Dial. 1-6.
In 2 Dial. Ballweg observed another displacement of material:
the word in/tellexerunt is divided, the 'in' at
the end of 174v and 'tellexerunt' at the beginning
of 176r, with fol. 175rv intruding. See ABMA

Collation of 1 Dial. 1-5 shows that Vb belongs to the family that includes PaVaVgLbPbPcKoArSaPzLy.
Between fols.20 and 21 there is a blank leaf, but no loss of text (1 Dial. 3.8.24-5.)
In gatherings of 12 folios, except the third (10), fourth (4, which ends 1 Dial. 5), and the eleventh (6, which ends 1 Dial. 6). Thus each of 1 Dial. 6 and 1 Dial. 7 begin new gatherings, but 2 Dial. does not. 1 Dial. 1-5 inclusive were written by one scribe, from the beginning of 1 Dial. 6 to the end of 2 Dial. by another. Thus Vb may have been originally two manuscripts that have been bound together, or it may have been planned as a single manuscript written by two copyists. Since material from 1 Dial. 6 has intruded into 1 Dial. 5, the exemplar used by the first copyist must have included 1 Dial. 6.
Occasionally in the margin or between the columns to the left of the text there are signs consisting of dots and/or lines, of unknown significance; see 33r.
Beside the beginning of 2.1 Dial. (fol. 183r) a marginal
comment reads, 'Forte tractatus tercius', but in the
bottom margin there is a comment 'Tractatus iste non est
tractatus tercius'. This does not imply that the author of
the latter comment had seen 3 Dial., since he could have known
from the preface to 1 Dial. that there would be a Part 3
and that it would be 'De gestis circa fidem altercantium
orthodoxam'.
The chapter list (fols. 189v-190v) consolidates chapters into larger units.*

According to Miethke, 'Marsilius und Ockham', p. 559, n. 54, the illuminations in this volume are the work of either Antonio Maria Sforza or Martino da Medina, who were active from the 1470s; the border of fol. 1r includes in the bottom margin the della Rovere coat of arms, and the inital letter shows a Francisan handing a book, i.e. this volume, to a pope---the donor has been identified as Bartolomeo della Rovere OFM, bishop of Ferrara 1474-1494, and the recipient as his uncle, Pope Sixtus IV, Francesco della Rovere OFM, pope 1471-1484. Thus Vc was probably produced in the 1470s.
Observations: Decorated first page or work and first page of each Book (e.g. 1r, 5r, 16r, 20v, 30r), decorated initials. (See MS online.) Vc and Vf appear to have been written by the same scribe. Corrections in several hands. Resembles Vf (see below) in treatment of catchwords (middle of bottom margin, surrounded by four tilda marks, 10v) and the beginning of gatherings ("Jesus" in the middle of top margin, 11r). Gatherings of 10 folios.

Copyist has made some marginal corrections. Other
marginalia in the one hand (different from text hand)
throughout; they include some corrections but are mostly
chapter numbers, statements of questions under discussion and
indications of stages of argument ('Contra secundum'
etc.); see 3v4r, 34v35r. (See MS
online.) In gatherings of 10 folios. Some material is out
of order. On fol. 110v the copyist writes: 'Adverte
hic diligenter quia columpne tres immediate sequentes spectant
ad tractatum precedentem. Nescio enim in quo loco seu qua
carta locari debeant. Relinquo quoque illud domino et
preceptori meo'). These three columns (110vb line 1 to
last line 111rb) correspond with Ly 168vb40-170ra45
[ = ABMA
vol. 20p.38 line 40 - p. 45 line 20]. This
passage should follow the last line of 104vb. At that point
someone has written: 'Require in ultimo col. huius quinternii
qui incipit "promittitur anime'''. The annotator who
numbered the chapters of 2 Dial. has supplied chapter numbers
for the displaced text.
The gathering that begins on 111r, which contains 3.2 Dial. 1,
is also disordered. Its folios have been renumbered after
binding as follows: 115, 113, 114, 112, 119, 117, 118, 116,
120. If the folios are read in numerical order the
text will be in the correct sequence. 3.2 Dial. 2 begins on
121r.
Vd ends ( 132v) earlier than 'antistitem', at a point corresponding to Ly fol. 270v a6 [= ABMA vol. 33 p.291 line 83] in the middle of a word, only part-way through a page--evidently its exemplar (apparently a member of the "antistitem" family) had lost the text following. See End of 3.2 Dial.
Collation of 1 Dial. 1-5 shows that Vd belongs to the family that includes CaLa. In 3.2 Dial. Vd seems to share an ancestor with the extant members of the 'antistitem' family but with some correction from another source; see End of 3.2 Dial.
Scott: Vd is a very careless MS with some outlandish readings but there is reason to suspect that it may have been copied from a MS partially corrected against the recension represented by MzNaVe.

This copyist has apparently identified himself on fols. 265v and 300v as Alphonsus Petri of Compostella, and gives dates of completion -- 1410 for item 6, 1411 for item 5. Someone with bold handwriting has annotated all items except 4. The copyist has made some corrections to the text of the Dialogus, the bold annotator and at least two other readers have written corrections and other marginalia. For examples see 39v40r, 65v66r, 67v68r, 98v99r, 101v102r, 107v108r, 131v132r.

Observations: Vf includes the tabula also found in Vc. First folio missing in each Book (i.e. fols. 1, 5, 17, 22, 32, 57, 111), and also fol. 65. (See MS online.) Corresponding folios of Vc are elaborately decorated, so it is possible that the missing folios of Vf were so too and were removed (stolen?) because of their value as artwork. Decorated initials: 36v. Vc and Vf appear to be the work of the same copyist or the same scriptorium--the writing, materials, text are similar; in both MSS 'Jesus' is written at the beginning of each gathering (see 11r); there is a similar treatment of catchwords (see 10v). Scholz and Etzkorn both date Vf to the 14th century; however, it must be almost contemporary with Vc, which was produced in the late 15th century.

In Es these passages are added,
keyed to insertion signs, at the end of the MS (232r). Where
could the corrector have got them from? Not from any other
member of the antistitem group, since they are not found
in any of those MSS; and not from any of of Pz, Ly,
Mz, Ve and Na or their ancestors, since
then he would also have added chapters 17-23. The
corrector of Es must have had access to a member of
another branch of the antitstitem tradition from which
these passages had not been omitted (or to which they had been
added by a corrector).
In Es there is some confusion in the text at the end of
the second insertion. The passage should read: "Item
Nicolaus papa, ut legitur dist. 21. c. Nunc autem, ait, 'Prima
sedes non iudicabitur a quoquam.' Item Anterius papa, ut
habetur 9, q. 3, c. Facta, ait, 'Facta subditorum iudicantur a
nobis, nostra vero a domino iudicantur'. Item Sixtus papa, ut
habetur 2, q. 5, c. Mandastis, cum fuisset criminatus...'".
However, the last four lines of the insertion in Es read:
"Item Nicolaus papa, ut legitur dist. [gap] non autem, ait,
'Facta subditorum iudicantur a nobis, nostra vero a domino
iudicantur'. Item Sixtus papa, ut habetur [gap] ait
'Prima sedes non iudicabitur a quoquam.' (End of
addition.) After the insertion mark to which this addition is
keyed, the main text continues: "Anterius [?]
papa, ut habetur 24, q. 3, c. Recta, ait, 'Facta
subditorum iudicantur a nobis, nostra vero a domino
iudicantur'. Item Sixtus papa, ut
habetur 2, q. 5, c. Mandastis, cum fuisset
criminatus...'". Thus the addition has material out of
place (the words in bold), words found again a little later in
the main text.
Vd contains the two omitted passages, (first at
fol. 131vb line 2ff, second at fol.132ra line 13ff) not as
insertions but as main text, but with a similar error toward the
end of the second passage. In Vd the last few lines of
this passage (fol.132ra from line 7 from the bottom) read: "Item
Nicolaus papa, ut legitur dist. 21. c. [omits nunc
autem] Item sixtus papa ut habetur 'Prima
sedes non iudicabitur a quoquam.' Item Antherius papa,
ut habetur 24, q. 3, c. Recta, ait, 'Facta subditorum
iudicantur a nobis, nostra vero a domino iudicantur'. Item
Sixtus papa, ut habetur 2, q. 5, c. Mandastis, cum
fuisset criminatus...". (Vd does not repeat, as Esm
does, "Facta subditorum... iudicantur".)
So in both Es and Vd some words from a few
lines further down intrude into the passage from Pope Nicolaus
and then occur also in their proper place. A possible
explanation for these similar errors is that an ancestor of Vd
contained corrections taken from the same MS (or a kindred MS)
as supplied the two corrections in Es. (Perhaps the
source(s) of the corrections also had these passages as marginal
corrections.) Both Es as corrected and also (given the
error in the second passage) Vd suggest the existence of
a lost manuscript that contained the missing passages but (given
that MSS corrected from it contain nothing beyond "antistitem")
ended with "antistitem". (The exemplar of Vd must have
lost its last page.)
Hypothesis: Postulate X, which ended at 'antistitem' but contained the two passages, and postulate two descendants of X, viz. X1 and X2, of which X1 lost the two passages and X2 did not. The extant "antistitem" MSS all descend from X1. However, Es and an ancestor of Vd were corrected from some lost MS of the X2 tradition (not necessarily from the same MS), or from some lost MS of the X1 tradition to which the two missing passages had been restored (the second, at least, probably in the margin) from some MS of the X2 tradition.
Di and Fr
seem to have ended originally at 'antistitem', omitting
the two passages. However, these MSS were later continued to the
point reached by MzLyPz,
viz. ABMA
vol.
33, p.323 line 37. Di was
completed from Ly, Fr from either Mz,
Pz or some kindred MS. The correctors of Di and
Fr noticed the second (but not the first) of the two
missing passages and supplied it -- see above, here and here.
Ar has (uncorrected) the two omissions characteristic of the antistitem group, and may therefore have had the same ancestor as the extant members of this group---but if so it had another ancestor that contained additional text, since Ar ends later than the members of the antistitem group, part way through 3.2 Dial. 3.17, at 'hoc multis rationibus improbatur primo' (= ABMA vol. 33, p.299 line 97).
Thus it seems, judging from the way the text ends, that the
extant MSS of 3.2 Dial. belong to three families: (1) MzPzLy;
(2) VeNa; (3) the 'antistitem' group. Compare
John Scott's analysis,
based on the beginning chapters of 3.2 Dial. (in which Vd and Ve
are referred to as Rd and Re).
Ar is closely related to Pb in the early books of 1 Dial., to Ca in the rest of the 1 Dial.; in 3.2 Dial., Au is closely related to Pb. Ko and Vg are also to be considered in sorting out the relations of these MSS. The facts could be explained if we suppose-- (1) three MSS no longer extant, x, y and z; (2) x is the source (immediate or mediate) of Pb for the whole of 1 Dial. and of Ar up to 75v; (3) y is the source of Ca for the whole of 1 Dial., of Ar after 75v, and of the early books of Ko; and (4) z is the source of Vg for the whole of 1 Dial. and of Ko from some point in books 4, 5 or 6. To refine and test this hypothesis it would be necessary to collate more extensively to find the point at which the copyist of Ko (same hand throughout) switched exemplars and to see whether other MSS copied from x, y and z can be identified.
The exemplar of Pb for 3.2 Dial. may be Au (which contains only 3.2 Dial.), or Pb may the exemplar of Au, or both may have the same exemplar or a common ancestor.
Several other MSS show a change of handwriting within a Part that does not seem to relate to any change of exemplar: see Di, We (both of which seem to have been produced quickly by breaking up the exemplar), Pb, Sa. There are also MSS in which different hands wrote the different Parts, which may originally have been separate MSS: Ba, Fi, Na, Pb, Pc, Un.

Knysh, Ockham Perspectives (Winnipeg, 1994), p. 23) Mz, at some time belonged to Simon de Plumetot; Pe is in his hand. He also had d'Ailly's Abbreviatio copied by one of his scribes (BN ms. lat. 14579); Murdoch, op. cit., p. xxxviii.
